Myanmar's former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who is living in captivity, is denied access to emergency medical care, according to her youngest son. According to Kim Aris, military leaders blocked prison authorities' request for urgent care. Prison sources told British broadcaster BBC that 78-year-old Aung San Suu Kyi is suffering from severe toothache that prevents her from eating. An army spokesperson, on the other hand, said she is in good health and receives regular medical check-ups.
Aung San Suu Kyi was deposed in a military coup in 2021. She has been incarcerated ever since and was sentenced to 33 years in prison for various charges. Initially she was under house arrest, but later she was imprisoned. She has been seen in public only once after the putsch on February 1, 2021, during her trial. She received a partial pardon in early August 2023. Several world leaders have called for her and thousands of others detained since the coup to be released.
In September 2023, the political crisis in Myanmar took center stage at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Indonesia. ASEAN leaders have condemned Myanmar's military authorities for the ongoing violence in the country. Myanmar itself was again not invited to the regional meeting.
